What is Injection Moulding?

The manufacturing of engineering products from thermoplastic and thermosetting plastic materials is done by a special process called Injection Moulding

The process basically involves the feeding of heated and mixed mixture of material to the mold cavities where it cools and hardens into the required shape. Thus Injection Moulding machines comprises of units such as heating barrel, screw-type plunger or an injection ram , and a material hopper.

A product is firstly designed by an engineer and the required design is then passed to mold maker who builds up the mold cavity based on the features and designs prescribed in the design by the engineer and then finally using these molds by the process of Injection Molding the required product is manufactured. Injection Moulding has a wide application and is efficient in manufacturing a variety of parts, from the smallest component to entire body of machine.

Many different types of Injection Moulding processes are used like In-mold decoration and in mold lamination, Injection-compression molding, Metal injection molding, Injection molding of liquid silicone rubber etc.

Advantages of Injection Molding are as follows:

  • High production rates
  • Repeatable high tolerances
  • The ability to use a wide range of materials
  • Low labour cost
  • Minimal scrap losses
  • Little need to finish parts after molding
